Thriving as a Woman in the Construction Space
The construction industry is gradually embracing gender inclusion. Nevertheless, this comes with it's own challenges. Dasola shares her story of how she thrives in the construction space despite these challenges.
Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do
My name is Dasola Agbo Semiat, I work as a Site Supervisor at O’Spaces Nigeria Limited
What does this role entail?
It is my responsibility to ensure that quality works are delivered in terms of materials, architectural designs, and so on. I also have to make sure that structural and architectural specifications are strictly followed which entails communicating with the workers from the foreman down to the laborers.
What led you into the construction space? Not many women venture into it
Initially, I wasn’t thinking of going into construction. I had applied to study computer science but was given Building Technology. I didn’t want to remain at home and so I decided to take the course. In my first year of school, we had people come to talk to us about the construction industry. I remember them telling us that we shouldn’t feel bad or less important that our course was construction-related. So I decided to take the course seriously and was fortunate enough to intern in a good construction company.
As a woman in the construction space, what are some of the challenges that you face?
I have faced a lot of challenges as a woman. I recall I was on site one day and I asked a foreman to work for me. I gave him the designs and told him what I wanted him to do. He stood up, condescendingly staring at me. He felt I didn’t know what I was saying. So I took the tape, I measured the work, I used my builders square to ensure the information I had was accurate, I ensured my work was aligned...He was amazed and I gained respect for proving my abilities.
Another challenge is negotiating with people, they begin to question your abilities because you are a woman. Notwithstanding, when you prove to them that you can get the work done, they give you the job.
How have you been able to overcome these challenges?
I overcome these challenges through patience and by proving my abilities.
What is your advice to women seeking to venture into the construction space?
Don’t give up. Do not consider yourself irrelevant, you are relevant and we need you. There is less stress when you know what you are doing, the problem comes when you are not knowledgeable about your field.
What do you love most about your job?
What I love the most about my job is making a picture become a reality. I’m happy when I transform 3D designs into reality and the clients are pleased with the job.
